Printer Interface Identification

Your problem: You want to interface at Point of Sale system to a Text Inserter (or you have a DVR/NVR with a Point of Sale input) and you want to connect to a printer or customer display but you do not know how. VRX Company can solve your interface issue and lead you to Loss Prevention Success!

If you want to interface to a printer, stay on this page.
If you want to interface to a customer display, follow this link: CUSTOMER DISPLAY IDENTIFICATION.

Note: USB interfaces cannot be split so replace any USB printer or pole display with another interface type - preferably serial.

Printer Interfaces

Receipt PrinterMany Point of Sale systems are so locked down by a controlling franchisor that all you can do is try to capture data from a receipt printer. For parallel printers this is not something a simple splitter cable can do. The VR2004 Text Inserter can interface to parallel port printers and capture and convert the transaction data to serial for easy interface to a DVR.

If you are trying to interface to a receipt printer you must check the interface at the printer and find the match below.

We must check the interface type in order to identify and provide the correct solution for your situation.  Because of the way connectors evolved on personal computers there is opportunity for considerable confusion about parallel versus serial interfaces on printers.  You must look at the connector on the printer to be sure.

Parallel Port Receipt Printer

Parallel interface printers use the Centronics connector pictured here on the back of an Epson receipt printer below.  Notice the wire retainers for the cable.

Serial Port Receipt Printer

Serial printers use a DB25 FEMALE connector pictured here on the back of an Epson receipt printer. Notice the 4-40 hex screw retainers for the cable.  Notice that RS-232 is stamped into the metal just under the connector. RS-232 is the name of the serial interface standard.

To connect data from his kind of printer to a serial port on a DVR your DVR must accept printer codes or you need convert (reformat) the printer data data to serial ASCII by removing the printer control codes.

The POS has parallel output. Centronics connector on an Epson printer.

Your DVR has serial input on a DB9 connector.

Serial Data Reformatting (Serial to Serial Interface)

For interfacing to customer pole display data the DVR may have extraneous "control characters" known only to the pole display but not to your DVR. If the DVR software was written in Asia, good luck getting tech support on the phone or getting a software change for your customer's point of sale. VRX Company comes to the rescue with our VR2004 which can capture the POS data, strip out unusual "control characters" and on the VR2004 Serial Out port data reformatted with with simple CR LF delimiting. Like a printer but even simpler.  You customer gets the full benefit of the DVR's POS interface and much more readable inserted text.

Your Problem

Messy inserted text with distracting control characters.
